Police burst syndicate behind local firearms production in Cross River

Cross River State Police Command has smashed a syndicate that specializes in the local production of automatic rifles including AK47.

The Police on Friday paraded a 32-year old man suspect and member of the syndicate, Fobi Kingsley Mbaku for allegedly helping to convey firearms and bullets in bags within Nigeria and to Cameroon from the Cross River State axis.

The state Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, CP Aminu Alhassan said the suspected gun runner was arrested along Ranch Road, Obanliku LGA of the state.

Aminu there is a hideout for locally fabricated automatic rifles, and that the suspect is a member of the gun-running syndicate which operates within Obanliku and its environs.

He said two hundred rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were allegedly recovered from the suspect adding that “effort is ongoing to arrest other fleeing syndicate members and to unravel the source and mission of this illegitimate venture. The suspect will be charged to court as soon as the investigation now completed.

‘’The suspect in Police net confessed that his friend who is still at large usually asked him to help convey bags of the ammunition to cross the Nigerian border into Cameroon.’’

He added that he has “been doing this for over six months. But I must say that I really did not know the contents of the bags I usually carry across the border. I am usually paid N10,n 000 each time I conveyed the goods.”
